About Us
Sun, Country and You
Sun, Country, & You (SCY) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization located just outside of Crookston, about 3 miles east, that was started in the summer of 2002. SCY is an unique organization that combines all aspects of nature and a wide variety of animals to promote a high quality of life to people of all ages and abilities. The main way we do this currently is through the classes we offer, but we also provide one-on-one sessions and limited therapeutic riding and driving as needed.
Each of our classes are built around connecting our students to the natural world, whether it be nature in general or horses specifically. Our instructors work to provide activities that build an appreciation of nature, are educational, and promote strong teamwork skills. Each class is open to students with special needs and typical developing students. This blend of ability levels creates an open environment for all students to succeed. Each student is given the opportunity to build upon their strengths as well as learn how all are important and have something to contribute. Another important element is that each class strives to promote a healthy way of living by incorporating a high amount of physical activity and healthy snacks to refuel the body.
All classes and activities take place on our 50 acre farm where we enjoy access to trails that wind through the woods, the river, a pond, many open areas, as well as a large open barn to provide indoor class setting when needed. During classes students will learn about the natural habitat of Minnesota and native plants and animals as well as learning how to care for our many farm animals. Some of our resident animals include a pot-bellied pig, miniature and full sized horses, rabbits, alpaca, sheep, ducks, chickens, dogs, cats, and many more.
All classes and sessions are taught by Eliesha Owens, the founder and program director of SCY. Eliesha Owens received a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education from MSUM in 2005.
